One out of five Indigenous people in the world live in India (over eight percent of India’s population of one billion), but the meaning of "Indigenous" in India is different from settler states like Taiwan or New Zealand, where the non-Indigenous population arrived much more recently. To better understand what it means to be Indigenous in India, this course looks at the history of colonialism, the role of caste, the rise of Hindu nationalism, as well as the status of other marginalized groups in India.
